Using social media

Aside from spreading the word about my writing, I am using forms of social media more as an outreach and to market myself and my work. This blog is a favorite form of connection. I also have a Facebook author page, Amazon author page, Twitter, LinkedIn, Discus, and Instagram accounts.

I am curious about other bloggers and writers use of social media, and what success people have had with a personal web page. How have others been effective in marketing? What options and venues have been most productive?

I can’t really afford to pay a professional web designer. Has anyone found a good tutorial I can get about doing the process myself? I get tweets about promoting my book or getting followers for a fee and I wondered if anyone has experience with this?

There have been good results for me using Facebook boost for posts about new work or special deals I’ve run with Amazon KDP, and the cost is manageable for me. I’ve linked the author page to this blog and my Twitter so the word gets out.

So I just keep plugging away writing and blogging, having fun with all the new followers, and hearing what’s happening in the world of words.

Cheers!

Standing up

I’ve been looking at all of the media about the election. The mainstream media as well as social media. It is scary how divisive and defensive the comments are, and how aggressive humans can be when they feel wronged. What surprises me is that one side feels since they lost there is something wrong and they feel the process failed them. The people who won feel vindicated and validated, as though an oppressed voice was finally heard. Broad statements lumping vast populations into groups identified generally as stupid or intolerant because of their political positions have polarized humans, even within families. I am sorry if there are people who will never be my friend because of how I voted. I will say this was one of the hardest votes I have ever cast, and yet I was privileged to have the opportunity.

I’m still deciding. “He that is without sin cast the first stone.” John 8:7

Even though Mr. Trump has won, there is no full mandate or complete consensus in this win. It represents an evenly divided voting public, so Mr. Trump needs to see that reconciliation and healing need to be in all his statements and actions. This is no time for recriminations and bragging. Now we need to move forward. As a Christian (Jesus follower) I know God sets these things in place, just as He has in the past. Now comes accountability for what has been given.

Intolerance and racism seem to be the buzzwords now. For an example of the epitome of intolerance look at radical Islam. We need leadership now that will force tolerance on them the way the USA is expected to be tolerant. If you come to this country to live, you are under our laws and constitution. Those are the final and ultimate say in the USA. We are no different in this than in most other countries-especially the ones who are trying to force “tolerance” on us. Radicl Islam is racist, homophobic, misogynistic, and profoundly intolerant and expect to be allowed to continue with this attitude unpunished wherever they go. Bite me!

I’ve been discriminated against because I am white, I’ve endured rude and sexist comments because I am female, I’ve been ridiculed because of my weight, my extensive work experience was marginalized because of my lack of a degree, I’ve also been harassed because of my faith. My first best friend was black and it didn’t matter, my parents had best friends who were mixed race couples, I have a young friend I would be there for should she need it who happens to be black. I’ve seen what people of color have endured. I remember when there were “colored” and “white” bathrooms and drinking fountains but that doesn’t mean I felt privilege because of this. Instead I felt ashamed, and sad that humans would minimize other humans. I was profiled because of the pealing paint of my old but reliable car by the police officer who pulled me over. He was stunned when I produced  a valid drivers license, car registration and proof of insurance since he fully expected me to not have at least one of those. I know what it feels like to live on welfare and food stamps because I was an out of work single parent. I admit I was motivated to get work, so that lasted about a year, but I’ve been there.

“Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and work with your hands just as we have shown you, so your daily life will win the respect of outsiders and you will not be dependent on anyone.” 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12

I’m starting a grass roots movement right here, right now to elect my husband, Chuck Vaughn as the next president.
He is honorable, has integrity, is intelligent, has served in the military, is well respected, and has worked hard his whole life. He raised two amazing and self-sufficient children, and stands up for those who are oppressed.

This is the man who needs to run this country. BOOM!

Cheers!

Feeling insecure

I’ve been having second thoughts about Facebook and the security of my online connection. My phone is requiring I install Messenger even if I am logged in through the internet. When I looked at the permissions it requires to run it made me extremely nervous. I don’t have to have it yet on my laptop to use it.

I have a FB friend who had been off and then came back claiming she had been hacked. Earlier I had received a friend request from her that surprised me yet I accepted it, and now I have received instant messages from this person very late in the evening. It isn’t clear to me if it is her hijacked account. The messages are vague and one or two words. I was suspicious. Is this the hacker or my friend?

I hate when it feels as though technology runs my life.

Chuck and I rescued a hummingbird! It had somehow fallen into our fish pond and Chuck found it floating on the surface. Not knowing how long it had been there he picked it up thinking it was drowned, but its body twitched. We brought it inside and using a 1ml syringe we started trying to get it to drink some sugar water. It took a while but I noticed it open its beak, then its tongue flicked out several times and it started drinking. It opened one eye, then the next and started trying to move its wings. Suddenly it flew up and away, while we chased it to keep it from the ceiling fans. That was pretty funny seeing Chuck moving, hands in the air, chasing a wee hummingbird. It did get a little bonk by the fan, so we took it outside and set it in a planter. After a few more drinks it flew away to a nearby tree. Needless to say there was a lot of human high fives.

We were blessed with rain off and on yesterday that helped to cool things a bit from the 100’s to mid 90’s. The 100’s will be back with a vengeance along with the increase in my electric bill.

Cheers!

Twitter fun

Happy Monday afternoon. It’s cooled off here, mid 40’s, making me and Millie happy. Something else I’m having fun with is Twitter. It is so much fun to see these little snatches of ideas, personal opinions, dumb thoughts, amazing pics-peoples lives in 100 characters. It’s kinda like getting valentines on Valentines day to know how popular you are. The thrill of seeing followers add up and the downer of losing a follower is pretty addictive. I get the same thrill when I get new blog followers.

I’m at 100+, you like me, you really like me!!

I like twitter, and I am starting to do more Instagram as I learn how it works. Facebook is getting a bit boring. I also have Linkedin and Tumbler accounts but my knowledge of those is basic.

I have been reading a lot the last few days and have gotten some great suggestions for reading material from different genre’s from twitter.

Just what I need, more stuff to read. Just kidding, seriously just kidding.

I have also started following the twitter pages for two new TV programs I’ve really gotten into. The actors are young and beautiful but also have great depth in their acting. “The Expanse” and “The Magicians” have me wrapped up in watching them so I’ve used On Demand to get caught up.

So now I’m waiting for the next episodes. Hate waiting.

I don’t know how people follow so many social media sites. Do you have a preference?

Don’t forget to follow me on Twitter-I like yew!

Cheers,
